KCBS – Ham Radio History
Hello, everyone! I hope you are doing well this fall season! Just wanted to share with you a recent link a young man named Noah sent me regarding some very interesting amateur radio history. It pertains to the early transmission experiments at Herrold School in San Jose, California. One day in 1909, Mr. Herrold and one of his 16 year old students began experimenting with a 15-watt transmitter, and eventually ended up starting a broadcasting revolution!
The only radio communication that amateur radio operators of the period had ever heard was Morse code. So, it was quite a thrill for them to hear voices coming out of headphones that usually produced only dots and dashes. Once Herrold realized he had an audience of eager radio experimenters, he soon began to entertain them with news discussions, read clippings from the newspaper, and records played from his phonograph. As time passed, this became a larger part of the school’s operations, and regular programs were eventually heard from the station as early as 1910.
Great link, Noah! – Very much appreciated!
